What is soccer field?

A soccer field, also known as a pitch, is the playing surface for the game of soccer. Its dimensions and markings are defined by the Laws of the Game published by FIFA.

Dimensions:

  • The field is rectangular.
  • For international matches, the length must be between 100-110 meters (109-120 yards), and the width between 64-75 meters (70-82 yards).
  • For other matches, the length must be between 90-120 meters (98-131 yards), and the width between 45-90 meters (49-98 yards).

Markings:

  • Goal Lines: These mark the ends of the field and run the width of the field.
  • Touchlines: These mark the sides of the field and run the length of the field.
  • Center Line: Divides the field in half.
  • Center Circle: A circle with a radius of 9.15 meters (10 yards) marked around the center spot.
  • Penalty Area: A rectangular area marked at each end of the field, extending 16.5 meters (18 yards) from the goalposts and 16.5 meters (18 yards) into the field. This area contains the penalty spot.
  • Goal Area: A smaller rectangular area inside the penalty area, extending 5.5 meters (6 yards) from the goalposts and 5.5 meters (6 yards) into the field.
  • Corner Arcs: A quarter-circle arc with a radius of 1 meter (1 yard) at each corner of the field.

Goals:

  • Placed at the center of each goal line.
  • Consist of two upright posts joined by a horizontal crossbar.
  • The distance between the posts is 7.32 meters (8 yards), and the distance from the lower edge of the crossbar to the ground is 2.44 meters (8 feet).
  • Nets are usually attached to the goals.

Surface:

  • Traditionally made of grass, either natural or artificial.
  • Artificial turf (artificial grass) is becoming increasingly common, particularly in areas where natural grass is difficult to maintain.

The specific dimensions and surface of a soccer field can vary slightly depending on the level of play and the regulations of the governing body. However, the general layout and markings are consistent across all levels of the game.
